Tras la muerte de su padre, Ludivine Jarisse hereda la humilde granja familiar. Cuando vuelve al pueblo Roberte, una amiga suya de la infancia que trabaja en París como artista de variedades, le muestra el coche y los vestidos que le ha comprado su "protector", al cual le debe también su trabajo.
