Dans la famille Kobayashi, le père Katsuhiko se consacre à son travail, la mère Saeko occupe parfaitement sa place de femme au foyer, la fille Erika prend des cours de chant et le fils Masaki prépare ses examens. Tout va bien, d'autant que les Kobayashi réalisent leur rêve : emménager dans une maison moderne en banlieue. Cette petite musique du bonheur tourne court quand arrive le grand-père, Yasukune.
